This annual event will take place on the first or second Saturday in April at Houston Baptist University. Students perform two selections from memory and receive written feedback from a judge. Top scoring students receive ribbons and may be invited to perform in an Honors Recital that evening. Students must submit the $20 entry fee to Ms. Combs by the first week in February, by which point they should also be working on their chosen repertoire for the event.

Students have two performance opportunities in December:
Our spring recital is traditionally held on the first or second Saturday in May (scroll down to a previous post to see the announcement of last year's recital). All students are strongly encouraged to participate. This post will be updated when the exact time has been scheduled.
Students who like to write music may enter the Composition Contest. The $15 entry fee must be paid to Ms. Combs by the first lesson in November, and submissions must be made to the KMTA Original Composition Contest DropBox by 5:00 pm on November 15. Formatting requirements and a link to the DropBox are available upon request. A KMTA expert will assess each submission and recommend changes to be made prior to submission to TMTA. Students who wish to participate in this event must also enroll in the Theory Test either in October or February and earn a passing grade (70% or higher).
One of the students in our studio earned an Honorable Mention in the 10th-12th grade division last year! What: The Texas Music Teachers Association provides comprehensive tests of theory skills for students in grades 1 through 12. Students may take the test for their grade level or a younger grade, depending on their experience and competence in theory. Medals are awarded for scores of 90% or higher.
When: The test is offered twice a year in Katy. This school year's dates are Saturday, November 11, 2017, and Saturday, February 24, 2018. Where: Westland Baptist Church Fee: $23.25 (this includes TMTA Student Affiliate registration and test enrollment fees) Deadline: For the fall test, fees must be paid by the first lesson in September. For the spring test, the first lesson in December. Why: Theory is an integral part of musical studies! The test is not mandatory to continue in this studio, but provides good motivation for students to learn theoretical concepts. It is also a prerequisite to participate in some TMTA activities, including the Original Composition Contest. KMTA's annual Sonatina Festival will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Houston Baptist University. Students may request a morning or afternoon performance time. Students interested in participating should choose a sonatina or sonata during the month of August. There is a $20.00 entry fee, due at the first lesson in October. Each participant will receive written feedback and a ribbon.
