Students who like to write music may enter the Composition Contest. The $15 entry fee must be paid to Ms. Combs by the first lesson in November, and submissions must be made to the KMTA Original Composition Contest DropBox by 5:00 pm on November 15. Formatting requirements and a link to the DropBox are available upon request. A KMTA expert will assess each submission and recommend changes to be made prior to submission to TMTA. Students who wish to participate in this event must also enroll in the Theory Test either in October or February and earn a passing grade (70% or higher).

What: The Texas Music Teachers Association provides comprehensive tests of theory skills for students in grades 1 through 12. Students may take the test for their grade level or a younger grade, depending on their experience and competence in theory. Medals are awarded for scores of 90% or higher.
When: The test is offered twice a year in Katy. This school year's dates are Saturday, November 11, 2017, and Saturday, February 24, 2018. Where: Westland Baptist Church Fee: $23.25 (this includes TMTA Student Affiliate registration and test enrollment fees) Deadline: For the fall test, fees must be paid by the first lesson in September. For the spring test, the first lesson in December. Why: Theory is an integral part of musical studies! The test is not mandatory to continue in this studio, but provides good motivation for students to learn theoretical concepts. It is also a prerequisite to participate in some TMTA activities, including the Original Composition Contest. KMTA's annual Sonatina Festival will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Houston Baptist University. Students may request a morning or afternoon performance time. Students interested in participating should choose a sonatina or sonata during the month of August. There is a $20.00 entry fee, due at the first lesson in October. Each participant will receive written feedback and a ribbon.

Students wishing to participate in Spring Festival must pay the $20 participation fee at the first lesson in February (with February tuition). Entrants perform two pieces from memory for a judge and receive a written critique. A few students are selected to perform in an Honors Recital the same evening, location TBA.
Students may request a morning or afternoon performance time when submitting the registration fee. As this event is at Houston Baptist University , please allow plenty of time to drive to the venue and find the sign-in location. More details will be given as they become available. All students are encouraged to participate in our Christmas performance at The Ballard House on Saturday, December 10, 2016. The exact performance time will be updated here as soon as it is available -- please plan on an afternoon recital. We will wear formal attire, Christmas-themed if desired. Please review proper performance etiquette prior to attending.
The Ballard House is a place for seriously ill people and their families to stay while the patients undergo medical treatment, so this is a great opportunity for us to share our talents and the true spirit of Christmas. Music must be memorized at least two weeks prior to the festival, as the performance must be by memory. No parents will be allowed in the judging room. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 1603 Norwalk Drive Katy, TX 77450 Please park on the south side of the building (the side closest to Highland Knolls Boulevard), and proceed through the south foyer into the chapel. Students should plan to arrive fifteen minutes early, so that they may play a few notes on the piano and prepare to start promptly at 11:00 am. The recital will be 30-45 minutes in length, with chocolate-chip cookies to follow. Please take a few moments to review proper Recital Etiquette with your family before the event. Spring Festival will be held at Houston Baptist University this year.
